Founding of the Latvian Radio Society
The Latvian Radio Society (LRB) was founded – the first organization uniting radio technology enthusiasts and radio amateurs.
1930-1936
Creation of the Shortwave Section
LRB established a shortwave section and developed regulations for amateur radio.
1936
First Regulatory Framework
The first regulatory framework for amateur radio activity in Latvia was adopted (licensing and transmission regulations).
1940
Liquidation of LRB
LRB was liquidated following the Soviet Union occupation.
1940-1991
Soviet Period
Amateur radio activity continued in DOSAAF clubs and collective radio stations, but no independent organization existed.
1991
The Barricades
During the 1991 barricades, radio amateurs provided backup communications support in the independence process.
1991
Founding of LRAL
The Latvian Radio Amateur League (LRAL) was founded as an independent national amateur radio organization.
1992
Joining IARU
LRAL was admitted to the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU).
1993-1995
Restoration of Licensing System
Amateur radio licensing and examination system was restored in independent Latvia.
Late 1990s
QSL Bureau Restart
The QSL exchange bureau was restarted and Latvia's representation in international radio sport activities was established.
2000s
Repeater Network Development
A VHF/UHF repeater network was established throughout Latvia.
2010s
Implementation of Digital Technologies
LRAL actively worked on implementing digital modes, DMR, and internet-based communication systems.
2023
International Achievements
Young Latvian radio amateurs achieved high results in international competitions (WRTC youth category).
2025
Centenary Celebrations
LRAL honored the centenary of Latvian radio and amateur radio with special call signs and on-air activities.

LRAL actively participates in YOTA activities.
